Delete your Blackberry ID

Many App World users have asked the question “Can I delete my BlackBerry ID?”  Invariably, the answer is “no”.  A few reasons come to mind as to why someone would want to delete their BlackBerry ID.  It could be that the user changed email accounts and doesn’t want to remember two sets of credentials.  So they want a BlackBerry ID that matches their new email address and want to get rid of the old one.  I don’t recommend changing your BlackBerry ID for this reason since your purchase history is associated with your ID.   If you have no purchase history (or all the apps you downloaded were free) then it’s not too much of an issue. But if you paid for any apps, you don’t want to lose that proof.

Some users run into problems when they set up their BlackBerry ID;  the end result being that they can’t log in with it, and they can’t set up a new account with that same email address.  They are in ID limbo.

BlackBerry ID owners hope that the BlackBerry ID or App World web site allows them to delete their BlackBerry ID so they can “start over”.  No such functionality exists as of this writing.  But, if you can get your hands on the original email that was sent to you, when the BlackBerry ID was created, you CAN delete your BlackBerry ID.

I honestly wish that upon settting up a BlackBerry ID, a confirmation email would go out to the registrant’s email address to confirm they want the account BEFORE it is created.  But as it stands now, BlackBerry sends out a confirmation email only AFTER the account is created. If you want to delete your BlackBerry ID, there is a lifeline in the confirmation email that reads as follows:

“If you did not create or do not recognize this account, please click here to delete this BlackBerry ID”

It’s the word  HERE that is hyper-linked to a page on the BlackBerry ID web site. That link takes you here:

And then finally, after clicking “Continue” you reach your destination:

Until RIM comes up with another way to delete your BlackBerry ID account, don’t lose your confirmation email; just in case you want, or need, to delete the account.  As I stated above, since your BlackBerry ID is linked to your purchases, it is NOT a good idea to delete your account haphazardly.  It should only be done if your are experiencing trouble with your account.  By deleting your BlackBerry ID you are deleting the purchase history associated with it.  So if you were to switch devices or if your device crashed, you probably would not be able to retrieve your purchased apps, and reinstall them for free.  Currently, if you switch to a new BlackBerry device and sign in to App World, it will recognize your BlackBerry ID and that you are using a new device.  You are then asked if you want to use your BlackBerry ID on this new phone.  A “Yes” response will transfer your purchase history to your new device.

The reason I wanted to write this article is because so many users have had problems with their BlackBerry ID before they ever had a chance to purchase anything with it from App World.  In this case deleting your ID poses no risk.

On a side note:  In my role helping BlackBerry users, I often have to go through the motions of various things on my BlackBerry device or a BlackBerry web site so that I can be specific when explaining a certain procedure.  One of these procedures is setting up a Blackberry ID.  Over time I used every one of the 14 email addresses I own to create BlackBerry IDs.   Each time a user requested assistance, I couldn’t remember a minor detail of some sort.  So I would create a new BlackBerry ID until I found exactly what I was looking for – so I could explain it to a user.  As it turns out I found each and every confirmation email and deleted all of the BlackBerry IDs that were floating around in the BlackBerry ID system.  I followed the process I just explained above and it worked perfectly.

  2. Guys, just follow these steps:

    Go here: https://blackberryid.blackberry.com/bbid/login

Log into your account as you would on your Blackberry device. (remeber your username is your email address linked to your blackberry ID)

Once logged in you need to change your email address. Once you change your email address (example, change it to your hotmail address) log into your email account and there you will have that email with the option to delete the account.
